Creative Process and Inspirations
MC: Can you walk us through the creative process behind the “Kaution” EP? What inspired the themes of self-confidence and hedonism?
KOLD: The journey of creating “Kaution” was an exploration of my own growth and confidence. It wasn’t about crafting typical love anthems; it was about making bold statements.
Each track reflects a new discovery of my capabilities, driven by the vibrant energies of the producers.
The process itself was a reaffirmation of my own artistic voice—feeling that thrill of saying, ‘Girl, you did that!’ and knowing it will resonate with others.
Emerging from Delta, Nigeria, Kold AF has quickly carved a niche for herself with her expansive musical range and unique sound. As an artist, her core strength lies in her ability to explore and blend various genres, defining her style as Afrofusion.
This versatility is clearly reflected in her music, resonating with authenticity and innovation. Impact of Collaborations
MC: You’ve worked with several artists and producers on this EP. How did these collaborations influence the final sound of the project?
KOLD: Collaborating with these incredible talents has profoundly shaped the sound of “Kaution.” For instance, Major Bangz brings a unique touch that harks back to his hip hop days, enriching the tracks with distinctive vocal chops and instrumental flavors.
Remy Baggins and I pushed the boundaries on tracks like ‘Ten Toes Down,’ where we aimed for an intense,
melodious complexity that demanded more from both of us.
Favorite Tracks and Personal Growth
MC: Do you have a favorite track on the EP? If so, what makes it stand out to you?
KOLD: It’s tough to choose, as each song from “Kaution” holds its special meaning and represents different facets of my journey. However, “Circle Must Break” is particularly close to my heart. It tackles deep societal issues like corruption and tribalism, aiming to disrupt the cycle of negativity and inspire change.
Evolution as an Artist
MC: How do you feel you’ve evolved as an artist since your first release?
KOLD: My evolution has been both profound and exhilarating. From my early days as KOEL to the powerhouse behind “Kaution,” my artistic path has been one of immense growth in confidence, skill, and expressiveness. Each project shows a new level of maturity and a deeper connection to my roots and personal experiences.
Musical Influences
MC: Who are some of your biggest musical influences, and how do they manifest in your
music?
KOLD: My musical palette is diverse, drawing from R&B, Jazz, Soul, Dancehall, and Afropop.
Each genre has molded my sound in different ways. Dancehall, for instance, resonates deeply with me, influenced by artists like Sean Paul.
Additionally, figures like Asa and Burna Boy have inspired me to embrace boldness and versatility in my music.
Goals for the EP
MC: What do you hope listeners take away from the EP, both musically and emotionally?
KOLD: With “Kaution,” I aim to make a definitive statement about my artistry and the impact I want to have. I hope the EP empowers listeners, offering them a mix of resilience and joy, encouraging them to embrace life fully and authentically.
Reflections on the Listening Event
MC: How was the experience of the listening event at Silk Lagos for you as an artist? Were
there any standout moments?
KOLD: The listening event was a remarkable moment for me, seeing the direct reaction of fans
and feeling the energy of the crowd responding to the tracks. It was affirming to witness the connection people had with the music, which is a profound reminder of why I do what I do.
The listening event at Silk Lagos was incredible! Despite concerns about the economic situation and fuel prices, the turnout exceeded my expectations. The venue setup, especially the red caution tape, perfectly captured the vibe of “Kaution.”
The feedback, particularly from Music Custodian, was heartwarming, and the enthusiasm for the red mufflers and cupcakes made the night even more special. It was truly a night to remember!
As I grow and achieve greater heights, I promise to bring Music Custodian along for the journey, ensuring you receive all the recognition you deserve for your unwavering support.
Kold adulating Music Custodian’s support of her craft over the years.
Fan Engagement and Interaction
MC: You had some unique interactions with your fans during the event, like the customized red
mufflers for the first 50 attendees. Can you share more about the thought process behind these
gestures?
KOLD: Engaging with fans is crucial for me, and having Joey Akan, a respected music critic, host the event added a special touch. It was amazing to see him and others not just attend but actively participate and enjoy the music. These interactions affirm that we’re creating something that resonates deeply with our audience.
Future Projects and Collaborations
MC: Can you give us any hints about upcoming projects or directions you’re exploring for future music?
KOLD: I’m excited about expanding my musical collaborations, including an upcoming project with Joeboy. We share a great vibe, and his support has been invaluable. Also, I’m planning a special show on December 1st, which will be a blend of creativity, fashion, and music. Looking ahead, there’s a new EP in the works for next year that will dive deeper into Dancehall and Afrofusion.
Industry Insights and Personal Growth
MC: How do you view the changes in the music industry, especially regarding how music is released and consumed?
KOLD: The industry is becoming more inclusive, especially for women, which is a significant and welcome change. The focus is shifting from superficial aspects to genuine talent, which is empowering. However, while genres like Afrobeats are gaining global recognition, it’s crucial we maintain our unique cultural identities without getting lost in mainstream sounds.
Message to Fans
MC: What message would you like to give to your fans who have supported you throughout your journey?
