2025 Lagos Countdown: Burna Boy, Wizkid, and the Best of Afrobeats Ignite the Stage
On Tuesday night, the iconic Tafawa Balewa Square in Lagos became a pulsating hub of Afrobeats energy as Wizkid, Burna Boy, and a host of Nigeria’s top A-list artistes took the stage for the Greater Lagos Countdown. The performances were nothing short of electrifying, leaving fans in sheer awe as they ushered in the New Year with unforgettable vibes and stellar energy.
The Greater Lagos Countdown, organized by the Lagos State Ministry of Tourism, Arts, and Culture, was an unforgettable night of music, excitement, and sheer celebration. Held at the iconic Tafawa Balewa Square, the event brought together Lagosians from all walks of life, united by a shared passion for music and the collective joy of ringing in the New Year.
This year’s star-studded lineup included some of Nigeria’s finest talents, with performances from the likes of Wizkid, Tiwa Savage, Burna Boy, Niniola, Olamide, Adewale Ayuba, Runtown, Bnxn, 9ice, Seyi Vibez, and many more. As expected, Wizkid captivated the crowd with his trademark stage presence, getting fans to sing along to every hit. Burna Boy, the African Giant, brought his fiery energy and unmistakable passion, turning the stage into a celebration of Afrobeats culture.
Tiwa Savage, the undisputed Queen of Afrobeats, delivered a sultry yet energetic set, showcasing her impeccable vocal range and magnetic stage presence. Niniola, the Queen of Afro-House, stole the spotlight with a performance that was equal parts soulful and electrifying, drawing the crowd into her emotive world.
The night also saw the legendary Fuji musician, Adewale Ayuba, take fans on a trip down memory lane with classics like “Ejo” and “Ijo Fuji,” stirring up a storm of nostalgia and excitement. 9ice, the master of “Alapomeji” vibes, also made a memorable return to the stage, delivering his iconic energy with a twist of fresh style.
One of the most heartwarming moments came courtesy of the show’s host, renowned comedian Gbenga Adeyinka, who had the crowd in stitches as he playfully taught Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu the popular ‘Oblee’ dance moves. The laughter and camaraderie were a testament to the night’s spirit of unity and joy.
In a heartfelt speech, Governor Sanwo-Olu expressed his gratitude to Lagos residents for their resilience throughout 2024
“This outgoing year was one of tremendous opportunity, especially for the youth. You’ve shown the true resilience that makes you real Lagosians. When we stand together, we succeed together,” he said, addressing the crowd.
Looking ahead to 2025, he added, “We wish you all the very best as we enter this new year. It will be a better year for each and every one of us. To my people in Ajeromi, Ajegunle, Victoria Island, Ajah, Ibeji-Lekki, Ojokoro, and Oworoshoki, we will see you bigger and better in 2025.”
As the clock ticked down to midnight, Lagos erupted in cheers and applause, marking the start of 2025 with an unforgettable night of music, unity, and hope for the year ahead.
