CANEX WKND 2026: African Music and Creative Economy Converge in Lagos

African music’s global expansion has opened new doors for artists, labels and creative entrepreneurs. But sustaining that momentum requires more than international audiences. It requires investment, stronger intellectual property frameworks, professional development, and connections between the businesses and people responsible for taking African creativity into new markets.

This November, CANEX WKND 2026 will bring those conversations to Lagos, Nigeria, from November 5–8, convening creatives, entrepreneurs, investors, policymakers, and industry leaders from across Africa, the diaspora, and the Caribbean for four days of cultural exchange, business development, and collaboration.

Organised under the African Export-Import Bank’s (Afreximbank) Creative Africa Nexus programme, this year’s edition will take place under the theme “One People, United in Culture, Creating for the World: From FESTAC ’77 to CANEX ’27.”

The programme will span music, film, fashion, literature, visual arts, gastronomy, sport and technology, with activities designed to connect creative practitioners to commercial opportunities, financial institutions and international markets.

For the African music industry, the gathering offers an opportunity to look beyond the music itself and examine the infrastructure, relationships and investment needed to support its next phase of growth.

The CANEX Music Factory 2.0 Is Coming to Lagos

One of the key attractions for music professionals will be CANEX Music Factory 2.0, scheduled for November 5–7. Combining a music business lab with a songwriting camp, the programme will bring creative development and industry engagement into the wider CANEX environment. It will sit alongside sessions examining the international growth of African music, including genres such as Afrobeats, AfroTech, AfroHouse and amapiano.

The timing is significant. As African music continues to reach audiences across international markets, questions around collaboration, rights ownership, distribution and commercial development are becoming increasingly important to the people working behind the sound.

Songwriting camps can create opportunities for artists, producers and songwriters to develop new material and build creative relationships. A music business lab adds another dimension by placing those creative activities within a wider conversation about how the industry operates and grows.

At CANEX WKND 2026, music will be part of a broader programme connecting creative talent with the business systems that can help turn artistic potential into sustainable opportunity.

Connecting Creative Businesses to Investment

Beyond its music programming, CANEX WKND 2026 will place considerable emphasis on financing and business development across Africa’s creative and cultural industries.

The CANEX Deal Room, running from November 5–7, is designed to connect creative projects with potential financiers and investors. The programme will also include investment forums and pitching sessions in which small and medium-sized enterprises can present their projects to financial institutions and industry experts.

Another scheduled session, Financing Creativity: Unlocking Investment in African IP, presented by CANEX Creations Inc., will examine the relationship between intellectual property and investment. A separate masterclass will explore investment readiness through the MANSA platform and CAMELS framework.

For independent labels, music entrepreneurs and other creative businesses, these discussions are particularly relevant. Developing a promising project is one challenge; building a commercially sustainable business around it requires financial preparation, credible business structures, and access to the right partners.

By bringing investors and creative enterprises into the same environment, CANEX aims to strengthen connections between African creative production and the capital needed to support its development.

Intellectual Property, AI and the Future of African Creativity

Intellectual property will also feature prominently in the programme, with an IP Rights Summit examining approaches to strengthening protection frameworks.

The wider discussions will address artificial intelligence, animation, authorship and ethics, reflecting the growing importance of technology in the creation, distribution and monetisation of cultural work.

For the music industry, these issues extend to songwriting credits, publishing rights, master ownership, licensing and royalty arrangements. As music crosses borders and reaches new commercial markets, understanding how creative work is owned and monetised becomes increasingly important.

The inclusion of AI-related discussions also creates space to consider how emerging technologies may reshape creative processes and raise questions around authorship and the protection of original work.

These conversations place CANEX WKND 2026 within a broader industry discussion: how can African creatives take advantage of new technologies and international opportunities while strengthening the systems that protect and reward their contributions?

Music, Film, Fashion and Technology Share the Stage

CANEX WKND 2026 will extend beyond music business discussions, with exhibitions, showcases and activities spanning several creative disciplines.

The CANEX Exhibition and Marketplace will provide a platform for creative businesses to exhibit and sell their products, connect with buyers and explore new markets. The event is expected to engage more than 10,000 delegates from across Global Africa and the diaspora.

Other scheduled attractions include:

  • Inheritance: Artists Across Generations, showcasing established, mid-career and emerging visual artists.
  • Threads of a Nation, a fashion installation tracing more than 50 years of Nigerian fashion.
  • CANEX Book Fair, bringing literature and publishing into the wider creative economy conversation.
  • Luxury Fashion Xchange, highlighting opportunities across fashion and luxury.
  • Creative Economy Technology Showcase and Innovation Lab, featuring African-led digital solutions for content creation, distribution and monetisation.

Film programming will include the 30 short films selected for CANEX Shorts 2026, alongside screenings of Funmilayo Ransome-Kuti and I Do Not Come to You by Chance.

The programme will also feature the CANEX Fashion Show and Awards Night, as well as a four-day AI-focused Creative-Thon powered by Gebeya, with a $50,000 prize pool.

Gastronomy will have its own place in the gathering through initiatives including the CANEX Junior Chefs Competition 2.0 and the Africa Jollof Wars Competition 3.0, bringing food businesses and culinary talent into the wider conversation around African creativity and commerce.

Together, these activities reflect CANEX’s approach to the creative economy as an interconnected network of industries rather than a collection of isolated sectors.

Why Lagos Matters to the Gathering

Lagos provides the setting for a programme centred on African creativity, entrepreneurship and international exchange.

The city has a substantial entertainment ecosystem spanning music, film, fashion, media and technology. Bringing creative professionals and investors together in this environment offers an opportunity to explore how those sectors can connect more effectively with wider African and international markets.

CANEX WKND 2026 also looks beyond any single market. Its theme, connecting the legacy of FESTAC ’77 with the road to CANEX ’27, places the event within a wider Pan-African conversation about cultural collaboration and the global reach of African creative industries.

For music professionals, the value of such a gathering will extend beyond performances and networking. Conversations around investment, intellectual property, technology and distribution can help identify the partnerships and business opportunities needed to support the industry’s continued development.

The longer-term impact will depend on what those connections produce, but the event provides a platform for the people working across these areas to engage with one another.
