Rhythm Is Language: Why Yoruba Percussion Still De Rhythm Is Language: Why Yoruba Percussion Still Defines African Sound

As we step into a new month, it feels important to return to something foundational - rhythm not as background, but as language.

“In Yoruba cosmology, there is no separation between melody and rhythm” . As percussionist Sola Akingbola explains, “once we establish the rhythmic theme, the melody comes out of that rhythm.” The drum does not accompany the story. It is the story.

This philosophy traces back to instruments like the gangan (talking drum), bàtá, and omele, which function not merely as percussive tools but as tonal communicators. Because Yoruba is a tonal language, the talking drum mirrors its inflections, allowing drummers to articulate proverbs, praise names, ancestral calls, and coded messages. The rhythm holds semantic meaning. It speaks. It remembers.

For centuries, percussion in Yoruba tradition has operated as a living archive - used in ceremonies, spiritual invocations, communal gatherings, and rites of passage. The drum is not entertainment. It is continuity. Artists like Babatunde Olatunji carried this consciousness into global spaces, merging Yoruba chants with Western frameworks and reminding the world that African rhythm carries spiritual and communicative depth.

Contemporary musicians such as Sola Akingbola continue to expand this lineage, blending traditional Yoruba rhythmic philosophy with modern sonic landscapes. When he speaks about rhythm becoming a “mantra” - something you stay inside until it opens - he is describing something deeply African: that creativity emerges from immersion, from repetition, from listening within the pocket.

And this is where it connects to us.

At Music Custodian, we speak often about documentation, infrastructure, and institutional memory. But at the core of African music - beyond streaming numbers and awards - is rhythm as language. Our sounds are not accidental. They are encoded. They carry ancestral syntax.

At our core, we are not just listeners. We are custodians of a rhythm that speaks.

The question is no longer whether African creative The question is no longer whether African creatives can win awards.

The real question is:

Can African institutions build systems strong enough that awards become inevitable - rather than exceptional ?

Afrobeats answered that question sonically. Film is now answering it visually.

And the task ahead is not celebration alone , it is construction.

@kingxdavies BAFTA win for My Father’s Shadow is a cultural signal that transcends a film moment. Years ago, Afrobeats built global dominance long before institutions caught up. The awards came later. Recognition followed momentum.

Today, African cinema is tracing that same arc - rooted storytelling, diaspora bridges, and global resonance forcing institutions to respond.

From sound to screen, African creatives are no longer asking to be validated - they are building systems that make validation inevitable.

The real conversation is no longer about trophies, but about infrastructure, ownership, and permanence. Culture moves first. Institutions adjust.

Nigerian singer-songwriter @joeboyofficial has tea Nigerian singer-songwriter @joeboyofficial has teamed up with rising Afro-fusion talent @kunmieofficial (featuring himself as Lavida Boy) on the newly released “Solace” remix - what we will describe as a heartfelt reinterpretation of the original that blends vulnerability and melodic warmth with broader sonic appeal.

Joeboy, already a leading figure in Afro-pop and contemporary R&B with a catalog that spans viral hits and his Viva Lavida era, shared the remix announcement on his official social channels, describing the collaboration as “straight from the heart,” while Kunmie thanked him for blessing the record.

This union reflects a growing trend in African music where established stars and emerging voices bridge audiences and sound worlds, offering fans fresh takes on familiar emotions and expanding the reach of Afro-centric sonic storytelling.

Love is not soft. It’s intentional. It’s patie Love is not soft. It’s intentional. It’s patient. It’s disciplined. And in Bayanni’s world, it exists side by side with ambition.

In this episode of Music Custodian Sessions, @itsbayanni opens up about the emotional architecture behind his EP Love & Hustle - a project born from a simple but universal truth: as adults, we are constantly balancing affection and ambition.

We love deeply. We grind relentlessly. And somehow, we find a rhythm between both. This conversation isn’t just about romance , it’s about the tension between vulnerability and drive, passion and persistence, softness and survival.

On a day the world celebrates love, we’re spotlighting an artist who understands that love is not separate from the hustle - it fuels it.

Bayanni represents a generation of African artists who are unafraid to express tenderness while still chasing greatness. This episode captures him in that becoming - reflective, grounded, and clear about the life that shaped the music.

The Grammys still hold prestige - that part is und The Grammys still hold prestige - that part is undeniable.

For many African artists, a nomination or win can unlock new markets, new audiences, and new doors. But prestige and reality are no longer the same conversation. African music today moves at the speed of streaming, diaspora, and digital community. It dominates charts, shapes global sounds, and drives cultural conversations long before institutions catch up. The question isn’t whether the Grammys matter — it’s whether they reflect the full weight of what’s happening.

Recognition without integration is not equity. Categories help, but true inclusion means dissolving borders, not reinforcing them. African music is not emerging ; it is established, influential, and globally embedded. Awards may validate, but culture decides longevity.

And right now, culture is moving faster than any trophy ever could.

@dj_tunez has officially announced his debut EP, I @dj_tunez has officially announced his debut EP, In Tunez We Trust Vol. 1, revealing the project during a live takeover on Apple Music Radio amid Super Bowl weekend programming.

Framed as a long-gestating body of work - two years in the making - the EP positions Tunez not just as a selector, but as a curator of cross-continental sound, bridging Africa and the diaspora with intention and range. “You heard it here first,” he said on air, signaling a release shaped by patience, trust, and alignment rather than speed.

The project boasts an expansive lineup led by Wizkid, alongside names that reflect the breadth of contemporary African and global music - Fola, Odumodublvck, Mannywellz, Tay Iwar, Seyi Vibez, Kenwe, and more.

Described by Tunez as “a movie,” the EP reads like a statement of intent: a DJ-led project that foregrounds collaboration, authorship, and cultural continuity -anchored in African excellence, but built for a global stage.

Tinariwen have announced their tenth studio album, Tinariwen have announced their tenth studio album, Hoggar, a powerful return to the foundations of their sound more than 45 years into their journey.

Recorded in southern Algeria alongside a new generation of Tuareg musicians, the album reconnects acoustic guitars, communal vocals, and desert-born storytelling with urgent reflections on displacement, resistance, and cultural survival.

Named after the Hoggar mountains - a symbol of homeland and endurance - the project positions @tinariwen not as veterans looking back, but as elders passing the torch forward. Hoggar is African music as archive, witness, and inheritance ; a reminder that some sounds are meant to outlive borders, trends, and time.
