In 1982, the ever-boundary-breaking Grace Jones de In 1982, the ever-boundary-breaking Grace Jones delivered one of her most unforgettable performances on Chile’s Vamos a Ver show, broadcast on Televisión Nacional de Chile. Draped in Giorgio Armani, she performed the full version of “La Vie En Rose” — with an instrumental intro lasting over two minutes — a moment of pure stagecraft that blurred the lines between fashion, art, and music.

This resurfaced clip is more than nostalgia. It is a reminder of Jones’ unmatched ability to bend time, captivate audiences, and embody the avant-garde spirit of Black excellence on global stages.

Grace Jones wasn’t just performing a song — she was staging a cultural event. Her presence, her defiance of convention, and her fearless artistry made her a symbol of liberation and timeless style in the early ‘80s — a legacy that continues to inspire new generations of artists today.

At Music Custodian, moments like this reaffirm why we elevate Black culture: because these performances are cultural artifacts, reminding us how artistry from our icons shaped the global creative landscape.

Monday Motivation | Music Custodian This week’ Monday Motivation | Music Custodian

This week’s mantra is simple yet profound: “I am the message that I bring.” 💡

@iamkevingates reminds us that true empowerment starts within. You cannot pour into others if you are not first pouring into yourself.

Discipline, accountability, and resilience are not just buzzwords—they are the standards we must embody before asking them of our teams, our communities, or the world.

Yes, the world can be cruel. But perspective is power. When you shift your lens, miracles reveal themselves. Every challenge becomes an invitation. Every obstacle becomes an opening. Every moment asks: “What else can I conquer to rise to the next level?”

At Music Custodian, we believe in this rhythm of growth. We are hard on ourselves not because we doubt, but because we know we must sharpen ourselves for the beauty and battles of the journey.

This Monday, let’s step boldly into the week. Let’s commit to being living messages of strength, creativity, and culture. Let’s conquer, not just for ourselves, but for the communities and stories we carry forward. 🌍✨

At the 2025 ceremony, @tyla once again stood tall on the global stage, reaffirming her place as one of the genre’s most powerful ambassadors. The back-to-back victory is more than just a personal triumph — it signals the continued rise of South African sounds within the global Afrobeats movement, from amapiano influences to Tyla’s signature fusion of R&B, pop, and African rhythm.

Afrobeats heavyweight @zlatan_ibile has announced Afrobeats heavyweight @zlatan_ibile has announced his forthcoming album, Symbol of Hope (SOH) — a project he boldly describes as “the best set of songs I have ever recorded in my whole life.”

The announcement arrived with a cinematic visual teaser, setting the tone for what promises to be one of Zlatan’s most personal and ambitious works to date. Known for fusing street wisdom with anthemic energy, Zlatan appears ready to expand his sonic vocabulary and his message, anchoring this new chapter on something deeper: hope.

Accompanying the reveal, Zlatan shared a striking caption on Instagram, quoting writer (sic) Laini Taylor 😂:

“Hope can be a powerful force. Maybe there’s no actual magic in it, but when you know what you hope for most and hold it like a light within you, you can make things happen, almost like magic.”

The quote frames the album not just as a body of work, but as a statement on resilience and vision. In a cultural moment where Afrobeats continues to take root globally, Zlatan positions Symbol of Hope as more than music — it is a manifesto of possibility, a sonic testament to the dreams and struggles that fuel African creativity.

From the streets of Lagos where he honed his Zanku sound, to global stages where he has become a flagbearer for the genre, Zlatan has consistently translated lived experiences into soundtracks of perseverance. With Symbol of Hope, he seems intent on deepening that narrative, creating music that uplifts, motivates, and immortalizes the pulse of the culture.

As Afrobeats grows beyond borders, Zlatan’s emphasis on hope aligns with the broader story of African music today: one of overcoming, of global recognition, and of pushing the boundaries of what this sound can represent.

🌱✨ Monday Motivation with Erykah Badu: Lettin 🌱✨ Monday Motivation with Erykah Badu: Letting Go to Evolve ✨🌱

This week at Music Custodian, our mantra comes from the ever-soulful @erykahbadu , whose words cut to the core of growth and transformation:

“A part of you has to die. Every time you evolve, you gotta leave it back there… That beautiful old you has to be left and you have to walk forward and not look back.”

In her reflection, Badu reminds us that evolution requires sacrifice. Growth is not just about embracing the new, but about shedding the familiar — even when it feels comfortable, even when it feels beautiful.

Often, the hardest part of transformation isn’t leaving people behind, but letting go of the versions of ourselves that no longer serve us. The familiar habits, the toxic cycles, the outdated ways of thinking — all must be buried for the new self to emerge.

As a community of dreamers, doers, and custodians of culture, we take this as a powerful charge:
➡️ To step boldly into new versions of ourselves.
➡️ To walk forward without clinging to what no longer serves our destiny.
➡️ To remember that the art of becoming is not in holding on, but in letting go.

This week, let’s carry Erykah’s wisdom as a compass — reminding us that rebirth is the price of true greatness.

In 2015, @mreazi blessed the world with Skin Tight — produced by @julsbaby_ and graced by @efya_nokturnal golden vocals. What started as a smooth, vulnerable groove soon became a cultural reset. 💿🌍

It was more than just a hit! Skin Tight slowed Afrobeats down, gave it intimacy, and showed us that less could be more. It reshaped the sound, opened new doors for soulful storytelling in Afrobeats, and stamped Mr Eazi as one of the architects of the modern movement.

🎤 In his anniversary video, Eazi reflected:

“Skin Tight changed my life… it just changed everything for me.”

💐 He gave flowers to Juls for the iconic production, Efya for that unforgettable verse, and to the fans who’ve carried the song for a decade.

For Sudanese-Canadian artist Mustafa the Poet (@mu For Sudanese-Canadian artist Mustafa the Poet (@mustafathepoet ) tenderness isn’t weakness—it’s a radical act.

In his latest Tiny Desk performance, Mustafa shares songs that are both prayer and protest, blending poetry with melody to honor his community’s resilience.
Surrounded by a choir of Sudanese women, the performance is at once intimate and expansive, offering the world a glimpse of how music carries memory, identity, and defiance.

At Music Custodian, we elevate moments like this because they affirm a truth we hold deeply: Black culture and African heritage are golden threads in the global fabric of music.
